BODY LANGUAGE : 회화의 즐거움PLEASURE OF PAINTING

스튜디오 콘크리트에서 개최하는 권철화(Kwon Chulhwa)의 두 번째 개인전 《BODY LANGUAGE : 회화의 즐거움PLEASURE OF PAINTING》은 관람자에게 자신을 해방시키고, 자유로워질 수 있는 우리의 개인적인 수단에 관한 물음을 던진다. 인간은 크고 작은 단순한 행위를 통해 만족감과 위안을 얻고, 오히려 그것을 확대시켜 강박증과 같은 ‘집착’을 보이기도 한다. 하지만 권철화가 말하는 ‘행위에서 오는 즐거움’, 즉 회화를 이용한 ‘신체적 언어’는 마치 무의식 상태에서 몸속에 흐르는 기억과 감성에만 의존하여 움직이는 것을 의미하며, 이는 그가 지금까지 작업한 수많은 드로잉을 통해 확인할 수 있다.
‘작가의 손끝’을 물성으로 여겨, 이를 작업과 연결시킨 권철화는 ‘Body Language’의 이중성에 집중해왔다. 이는 자신과 화면(Painting)의 실질적인 거리를 줄이는 것으로부터 시작하여, 화면 안 피사체의 행위 언어, 혹은 작가 본인의 행위가 언어로 표현되는 것으로까지 확장하였다. 이 확장은 권철화의 ‘감정’을 기반으로 자리 잡았고, ‘관계’에 대한 아이러니(Irony)가 그의 작업을 더욱 성숙하게 만든 것이다. 한 편의 역동적인 연극과 같은 이번 전시는 예견되지 않는 각기 다른 드로잉 선들을 통해 단편적인 ‘쾌락’을 위한 가치가 아닌, 순수한 예술(Innocent Art) ‘회화의 즐거움’을 전시장에 가득 메우고자 한다.
“노력하는 자 위에 즐기는 자”가 있듯이, 권철화의 두 번째 개인전은 그가 얼마나 작업을 즐겨왔는지에 대한 노골적인 모습을 보여주는 기회가 될 것이며, 또한 역으로 우리 개인의 원초적 행위를 위한 예찬의 자리가 될 것이다.

Studio Concrete holds the second solo exhibition of Kwon Chulhwa 《BODY LANGUAGE : PLEASURE OF PAINTING》. Through this exhibition, the artist asks question about personal way that each audience has for their own liberation and freedom. Some people get satisfied and relieved of simple deeds great and small, some other compulsively attach and expand it to the level of ‘Obsession’. However, ‘Pleasure came from the Deed’ of Kwon Chulhwa is described as ‘Physical Language’ with his painting. That signifies the movement depending on floating memories and emotions inside of unconsciousness and his many drawings demonstrates how that comes out on the paper.
Kwon Chulhwa took ‘Touch of the Artist’ as a property of matter and connects it to his work. As a further step, he has concentrated on diversity of ‘Body Language’. It begins with reducing substantive distance between himself and his painting, then, enhances toward expressing behavior of subjects in painting or of himself as a language. That progress establishes the foundation and raises his work to another level with ‘emotion’ of the artist, Kwon Chulhwa, and the irony of ‘relationship’. This exhibition, which atmospheres like a dynamic theatrical play, composes ‘Pleasure of Painting’ with various unforeseeable drawing lines not for as a value of ‘momentary delights’, but as an ‘Innocent Art’.
As the saying “A man who enjoys his efforts over a man who just endeavors” represents, this second solo exhibition of Kwon Chulhwa shall be the opportunity to show how much he thoroughly enjoys the work and how that passion turns out in his hands. As well audience ourselves will have admirable moments for realizing our individual primitive behavior within.

순결한 감관(感官)이 백지에 펼쳐져 몸짓을 이루는 직관의 미(美)
사고에 가두지 않고 사유의 세계로 펼쳐져 언어로 승화하는 시간들-
그러나, 그럼에도 불구하고
세속의 액자에 실려 이곳으로 수송된 저 몸짓들, 시간들을 보라!
‘회화의 즐거움’ 그 안에서 만난 자아가 점으로, 선으로-외롭게 진행한다.
번역이 필요하지 않은 다른 세계의 언어가 제멋대로 유영하며
이성과 논리의 세계와 ‘무색’하게 빗금 치고/
기어코 외계(外界)의 심상에 이르러 새롭게 펼쳐지는 미의 세계.
