A NOW

Live Improvised Symphony in four movements

2018.9.28 - 2018.10.25

by Young-Nam Song, Seulbi Kim

영국에서의 두번의 공동작업  ‘INVISIBLE, 2016’, ‘UNDER THE CITY, 2017’ 이후, 송영남 김슬비는  ‘A NOW’를 통해 그들의 작업을 처음으로 한국에서 선보이게 된다.

In times where our physical and a virtual reality mix together in almost absolute dichotomy, where visually documented memories get archived in clouds, where movement becomes mapped instantaneously by programs that statistically know our composition – the sensual experience of place and time has become utterly fragile.

Going somewhere does not necessarily require us to move, and more than ever we are able to create illusions and reproductions of experiencing a sense of place through technology. Living in a world more and more dominated by visually transmitted information, Seulbi Kim and Young-Nam Song chose to work with sound as their medium. Unlike our vision, our sense of hearing is not as trained and thus functions unambiguously explicit. By separating sounds from their visually perceived cause, the artists ask us to compose in our minds the complex space it belongs to.

A NOW is creating an experience that offers the recipient to sensually explore a place, oscillating between real and imagined, without going there physically. In three movements, Transcendence, Anxiety and Humanity, the artists are mapping the urban sphere  of Seoul through live-recorded soundscapes. However, the exhibition offers more than an auditive reproduction of the city. In a fourth and final movement, a Symphony of soundscapes is being composed, transcending Seoul into an immersive sensual experience beyond the boundaries of a physical confirmation of a place.

This symphonic theme becomes an overture for a new way of perception; one transcending our society’s obsession with the visual, entering our consciousness through sounds.

After having collaborated on two previous projects in the UK, INVISIBLE (2016) and UNDER THE CITY (2017), Kim and Song for the first time are presenting their practice in their home country. Investigating the intricacy of Seoul’s daily life through the ears of the audience, with A NOW the artists dare us to pay attention to scenes that easily pass by us in everyday life and to expand both our sensual perception and spatial imagination.
