지난 2016년 가을, 스튜디오 콘크리트와의 첫 번째 개인전 ≪Concrétisation≫으로 처음 우리에게 자신의 작업을 소개한 장 줄리앙(Jean Jullien)은 두 번째 개인전 ≪lineage≫를 통해 그간 그에게 있었던 변화를 선보이고자 한다.

 

한 해 중 5월은 우리에게 ‘가정의 달’이라는 명칭으로 불리고, 가족과 함께 보내며 자신의 미래와 과거를 예측하고 회상하여 시간이 흐르고 나이가 드는 ‘자연의 섭리’를 배운다. 최근, 장 줄리앙 역시 자녀가 생기면서 가정을 꾸려 아버지이자, 가장이 되었다. 그런 그에게 있어 가족과 함께 보내는 시간이 담긴 ‘기억’은 유독 높은 지능을 가진 ‘코끼리’로 형상화하였으며, 모든 역사를 기록하는 하나의 매체로 활용하여 작가 자신과 혼연일체 하였다.

 

더 나아가 회색의 ‘코끼리’를 현대의 환경을 구성하는 가장 안정적인 소재인 콘크리트(Concrete)의 색과 질감에 투영시켜, 콘크리트의 물성을 이용하여 시간성과 공간성을 표현하였다. 이러한 물성은 액체에서 고체로 응고하는 과정을 통해, ‘시간의 흐름’, ‘세월의 변화’를 나타내는 의미를 지니고 있다. 이는 우리가 젊은 날, 자유로운 여러 움직임이 액체 상태의 콘크리트와 같다면, 시간이 지나면서 고체로 굳어져 고정된 일상을 보내는 소위 어른과 같다.

 

하지만, 우리가 모두 그렇듯 자연스럽게 나이가 들어가는 과정은 끊임없이 본인을 찾아가는 하나의 ‘일환’이자 ‘유산’임을 인지하고 있다. 이러한 소중한 기억들은 작게는 본인에게서 시작되어 가족을 통해 사회에 함께 공유되어진다. 이는 장 줄리앙이 함께 나누고자 하는 하나의 혈통을 의미하는 ‘lineage’일 것이다. 

 

 

스튜디오 콘크리트 

 

Jean Jullien, who had his first solo exhibition Concrétisation with Studio Concrete in fall of 2016, will share the changes he experienced in the past two years with his second solo exhibition Lineage.

 

In the month of May, also known as ‘Family Month’, families spend time together to reminisce the past, predict the future, while also learning about how time naturally passes by or the ‘provision of nature’. Recently, Jean Jullien welcomed his child into this world, becoming a father and the leader of his family. By using an imagery of an ‘Elephant’, an animal with high intelligence, Jullien successfully illustrates his ‘Memory’ and time with his family. Through this medium he recorded every history, uniting art with the artist himself. 

 

Furthermore, gray ‘Elephant’ was depicted as the color and texture of concrete, the most stable material when constructing a modern environment, successfully expressing time and space. The process of solidification from liquid to solid matter, contains the meaning of ‘flow of time’ and ‘change of time’. If liquid concrete represents youth, the process of solidification symbolizes a slowly-forming-over-time adulthood. 

 

At the same time, we must fathom that aging is natural, a ‘legacy’ and a ‘part’ of our identity where we unearth our true selves. These precious memories are shared concisely with our own families and to a great extent, with the society. This is what Jean Jullien intends to share: ‘Lineage’.
